How does this work |
The goal of this website is to encourage you to save money by making a handmade gift and then presenting it to your recipient along with a small donation to a deserving organization that either of you are passionate about.

Handmade to give others a Hand up |
This site is dedicated to enable those whom would like to take a step back and look at the way they give gifts. The hope is to make handmade gifts (that actually don't cost more then regular gifts) and then to use the money you would spend on those gifts to give donations to worthy causes. I definitely encourage you to pick something you are passionate about - clean water, animals, orphans or the environment. Then when you make the homemade gift also give your recipient a card with information about the donation that you chose. My goal this year is to do this with every birthday and anniversary we have this year. You can see this described in my blog All they need.

Crafting is fun |
I have to admit I love crafts so this whole idea of giving handmade is wonderful to me, but I know that not all people craft alike. The directory has a skill level for each entry. Try out different types of crafts to see which you like best and don't get overwhelmed, remember that you are trying to come up with something the person likes, enjoys, or is passionate about - they will just be happy that you were trying so hard. The great part about the goal of this project is that your handmade item isn't the only gift you're also giving a small donation which will almost always please everyone (well sometimes kids don't fully appreciate it, but it'll be a good learning experience for them). |

Giving is such a wonderful thing. It is fun to see the joy in someone's face when you give them a gift, it's fulfilling to find just the right gift for a loved one, and it's often a way to let someone know that you care about them. But in America we often have our view of giving tainted by the world of materialism around us. Don't get me wrong I realize that it's great for the economy to buy things and it is super wonderful to buy from those who are making Handmade gifts! However, we are often feeling pressure from those around us to continually buy kids more and bigger gifts, buy something expensive for the person that already has it all, and to buy something nice so we don't look cheap.
But isn't it better to give of yourself, isn't it better to give to those who don't have anything?
I'm suggesting that you think about changing some of your gift giving habits. Give the gift of your time and energy (something that is often way more valuable and enjoyed then money) and think about giving a small portion of what you would have spent on a donation in your recipients name to an organization that they can be passionate about.
Because truthfully we all have enough meaningless gifts... lets make some with meaning. |
